Substance Abuse and Loss

Substance Abuse and Loss

October 25, 2019 - October 25, 2019

St Michael's Centre, Budbrooke, Warwickshire | £95/Early Bird £85/Concessions £70

Presented by Richard Allsup, this seminar will look at the growing, but mostly silent, epidemic amongst older adults of substance abuse. Research by The Royal College of Psychiatrists (2017) shows that a third of older people develop alcohol problems for the first time in their later life, stating bereavement as a key factor. By comparison, substance use among people under the age of 18 has steadily decreased in the last decade. Today, the fastest growing substance misuse group is the over 65s - a challenge to the traditional stereotype.
This workshop is designed to enable participants to :

1. Develop knowledge and understanding of the various forms of alcohol and drug use.
2. Assess risk associated with overdose, physical dependence and the symptoms associated with alcohol related damage.
3. Develop risk management plans in association with medical primary care practitioners.
4. Further understand substance use in response to bereavement and loss.
5. Consider the nature of change, resistance to change, and how to work with these as a therapist.
